Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student records. FERPA generally prohibits the disclosure of personally identifiable information derived from education records to persons who are not authorized to see that information. However, nothing in FERPA addresses any particular form of communication, such as email. In fact, FERPA became law years before the first commercial public email service was created, which, itself, was years before the use of email became commonplace.
